Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students show integrity, provide service to others before self, and demonstrate excellence in the areas of academics and citizenship. AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elective course in which students are held to the highest standards. When students are provided with academic and social support, they will rise to any expectation. The expectation for AVID students is to be COLLEGE BOUND!
It is a well-known and widely accepted belief that if students are focused and engaged in what they are learning, then naturally they will be more eager to learn.
Students who come to debate are more engaged in their daily classes and as such are more engaged, and by and large become better learners overall. While debate is an extracurricular activity at our campus, it greatly impacts how my students feel about school in general.
My Project
Tutorials are small group sessions held twice a week, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays, during the AVID elective class. During tutorials, students are divided into groups, no larger than 7, based on questions they have from their core academic classes and Cornell notes from the week. Under the direction and supervision of the AVID teacher, an AVID-trained tutor facilitates the discussion and work in the different small groups.
Tutorials allow students to work collaboratively on questions from their academic courses, and thus create a deeper understanding of concepts covered in core content classes.
Tutorials help students develop skills necessary to become self-directed learners by learning to evaluate, enhance, and acclimate their own metacognitive learning skills, as such time is valuable, and should be spent on thinking and learning rather than setting up wipe off boards or trying to holding paper in place, etc. These supplies will help students have more time to work together through their questions from their academic classes.
