This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a school social worker, I do a wide variety of seemingly-unrelated things that boil down to, "making sure students have what they need to be successful at school." Often, this means helping students access resources for issues that start outside of school- basic needs like food/clothing/housing resources, access to medical or mental health care, coping with mental health issues, etc.
Our school's Mustang Exchange multipurpose thrift "store" and game space is a one-stop room accessible to all students so they can get what they need in a non-judgmental environment.
We try to keep it stocked with clothing, shoes, food, school supplies, and personal hygiene items for students in need. Having access to these items helps remove the burden of figuring out how they could otherwise access them, and allows them to focus more mental energy on their education. Students who have free access to necessary school materials can get back to learning quickly without falling behind.
