My students need Post-it notes and highlighters in a variety of sizes and colors to help them mark important passages, record their thoughts, and remain active readers.

My Students
My students are learning to be active readers by questioning the text, relating the content to their lives and the world, and recording their connections. Without highlighters and post-it notes, annotating literature in public schools is nearly impossible.
My students are 8th and 9th graders in a quiet public school in a rural community in western New York.
The local economy is supported by both the summer tourism and education industries, and many students come from families who place a high value on education. My students also face challenges: many students are living in poverty, or will be first-generation high school and/or college graduates; some have learning disabilities that affect their ability to comprehend what they read. Despite the challenges facing my students, they are hardworking and optimistic young adults with a strong sense of community and empathy.
My Project
To help my students mark key passages in texts, this project contains several different sizes and colors of Post-it notes; lined Post-it notes will accommodate students with disabilities and those whose fine motor skills are still developing. In addition, highlighters in a variety of colors will allow students to highlight in different colors for different purposes. Using these materials, my students can learn to annotate texts and become more active readers.
Donors to this project will help 65 adolescents understand what they read and develop critical thinking skills needed to succeed in the "real world".
A successfully funded project will ensure that my Bulldogs are ready for colleges and careers after high school graduation, and that they learn to love to read.
