My Students

I have 7 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, and group time to work on academic skills and writing. Students have storytime to work on comprehension, math, science, and art where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and follow picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

My school district has started the year out with virtual learning which comes with challenges, especially for my special education students. My students need a lot of support from their parents to participate in virtual learning sessions. All of my parents are doing an amazing job supporting their children during virtual learning. In order to make virtual learning more hands on like we would do at school I have been sending materials home for students to use.

There are many activities I have to make virtual learning more accessible, attainable and fun for my students.

The reading curriculum I use is made for kids with special needs and works great with my class. There are many activities that go along with our reading curriculum that can be laminated and sent home. I have been sending home materials for the past couple weeks and it's been going very well!

The supplies I have to make materials are running low so it would be great to have more cardstock, laminating sheets and velcro to make more materials to send home so students can stay more engaged in lessons and have visuals to go along with the stories we read. My students need a lot of visuals so these materials are very helpful to work on learning concepts.
