My Students

Our school is a Title I school where most of the students participate in a free or reduced-price lunch program. Many are academically at risk and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Several struggle with absences and the desire to come to school. I want to help change that! I want kids to be excited about what they are learning and make connections with their lives outside of school.

Although my students are faced with life's hardships, they have good hearts and inspire me!

My goal is to help students realize that science is not just something that happens at school, but it is all around them. I truly believe the best way to do that is through hands-on-learning. My kids learn best through doing. When I mention there is a lab coming up, students get excited. I have heard the statement, "I wish we could do this more often" over and over from different students. I am always looking for ways to turn what they are learning into a hands-on-experience to make it relevant to their everyday lives and make new connections. This can, however, be a struggle when a department budget is nonexistent for over 300 students.

My Project

Most of our children are from economically disadvantaged households and many times students do not come to school with the supplies they need to learn and achieve. Anticipating for the very first day for school should be exciting and stress-free. Trying to get all the supplies your child needs from the school list can be very overwhelming when it is just not in the budget. Students shouldn't have to worry about things like this, and should just be able to focus on learning and growing. This coming year I would love to tell parents and students to not worry about a school supply list because it has all been covered! .

Having basic classroom necessities empowers students by giving them the tools and support they need to be successful.

Since I truly and whole-heartedly believe that students learn best when they interact with what they are learning we need many materials to do so. With these materials students will write, draw, color, cut and glue, solve problems and create unique projects using higher level thinking to demonstrate their learning. Students take more ownership of their work when they are creating and they love to show off their work! Since we are learning Science, students do many labs and activities throughout the year to learn the content and we are needing some lab supplies such as peroxide, iodine, PTC paper, and copper sulfate to do hands-on chemistry labs. Labs provide students with opportunities to think about, discuss, and solve real problems, and students have shown to retain a higher quantity of learning when they are given the opportunity to so. We are so exited to start the school year off right and worry-free!
