This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hello! I teach 8th grade English Language Arts and Reading at a Title I school. I knew very early on that I wanted to be a teacher because I wanted to pass on my passion for literature and reading to the next generation.
My students mostly live in an urban/ industrial area near the school.
Many of them come from large families and are expected to help take care of their siblings. I know that a large number of them deal with a lot more than the average kid, day-to-day. For many of them, going to school is a reprieve.
I see my students work hard in my class day in and day out, regardless of what might be going on in their lives. Every small victory for them is a victory for me as well. It is an educator's job to give students the tools they need to succeed, and I take my job very seriously.
My 8th graders are something extraordinary. They are fiercely loyal, witty, funny, smart, and definitely drive me crazy at times, but there is truly no better group of kiddos. I want to give them every opportunity for success possible.
My Project
This year has put forth an unprecedented set of circumstances for my students. After a year of virtual learning, teachers are having to go to new lengths in order to capture and maintain their interest.
Utilizing positive learning incentives such as snacks, stimulating interest through the use of tactile learning and colorful visuals, and using whiteboards for frequent checks of understanding have all been valuable tools for me this year.
The use of whiteboards appeals to tactile learners and gives students the chance to show immediate response/ feedback. The markers and colored paper will allow us to make engaging visuals and graphic organizers. The snacks will act as a positive incentive and motivator, and will also serve to aid students who may not be getting enough to eat at home.
