My students need age appropriate writing paper with guiding lines and various level readers mostly level C and D so I can begin my guided reading groups.
Kindergarten students are learning how to write and go through many drafts. My students are constantly practicing letter formation and expanding their ideas, which requires the needed materials.
I work in a Title 1 school where families are not able to buy all of the school supplies needed for the year.
My families often have enough for food, transportation, and clothing but not for extra notebooks or paper. The families truly do care about their children and want the best for them. The administrative team hold the expectations for students high just as the more affluent schools in the area do for their students. The school does a wonderful job meeting the students needs and trying to give teachers all of the necessary resources. However, sometimes the budget does not allow for extra materials that are needed in the classroom. I wouldn't have to worry about searching throughout the school for leveled readers or about borrowing books from other teachers if my classroom had its own set.
My Project
My students will be able to participate in guided reading groups immediately by utilizing the leveled readers. My students will also be able to engage in writing activities in response to the readings. It is very difficult for my young students to write between the lines of the discount primary notebooks that are easily found in our local discount stores. My students will be able to form their letters better and write more ideas if they had the age appropriate materials. Young children are visual learners and require modeling during each lesson. The selects materials will enable me to model the work for the students and help them achieve the goal successfully
My project will make a difference because I will finally have the resources I need to help my students engage in the reading and writing process daily.
My school does not provide a variety of guided resources and the leveled readers would be a great asset to my class. I have two scheduled blocks in which I am able to conduct at least four guided reading groups a day. Having the guided reading texts will enable my students to grow as readers
