This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The infamous DeWitt Clinton High School is located in the Bronx, NY. We are a Title I School. Minority enrollment is 96% of the student body (majority Hispanic), which is higher than the New York state average of 57%.
To say my students are lacking in resources (both in and out of school) would be an understatement.
If my co-teacher and I did not provide students with everything they might need/use throughout the school year, most students would have no supplies of their own. While I'm happy to be able to provide this support for students, the amount of intended year long supply is always depleted within 1-2 months. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 impacting my family, I will not be able to provide them with as much as I usually do this year.
However, what my students are not lacking is in spirit, passion, and drive. They have undoubtedly taught me so much more than I could ever teach them. They are mature beyond their years, balancing school, work (for many) and caring for family members at home. My students deserve the best, and I'd appreciate any help with giving them the equitable school experience they so deserve!
My Project
I am in need of this order because I am constantly planning lessons/activities and then realizing that I do not have the supplies to carry them out. The items I'm most excited about ordering are the mini-notebooks. In addition to the English curriculum that I currently teach, we are embedding vocabulary and grammar into our curriculum this year to ensure students are college ready. Each student will be given a mini-notebook and I'll challenge them to collect new vocabulary and examples of grammar that we are studying!
The other supplies will ensure daily opportunities/lessons can be taught thoroughly, and are not limited based on not having enough supplies, which has been my experience in the past.
