Supplies for the Music Room

My students need markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue and a 10-Drawer Mobile Organizer.

I am a music teacher in an small school in a large urban district. I teach kindergarten through 8th grade music and choir. 60% of the students in my school speak Spanish in their homes. Our school is a magnet school for world language. All students receive either basic conversational Spanish, or advanced literature, grammar, and philosophy in Spanish. 87% of the students are part of a free and reduced lunch program which means our poverty rate is high. However, our students are motivated, thoughtful, kind, and hard working.

Because our school is quite small, we can't afford to have an art teacher. Many of the teachers in our school have created ways to use art in the classroom so that the students don't miss out on this powerful means for expression. As a music teacher, I would love to create more lessons that allow the students to use artistic expression. I would like to be able to incorporate some drawing and design, but the only supplies I have in my classroom are the used materials from my own childhood that I found buried in my parents basement. We have dried up glue, broken crayons, and broken cardboard containers for storage. Right now the students are trying to create visual representations of their culture to go along with a unit we're doing on cultural music. I would like them to be able to have the materials they need to be able to complete this project.

I would like a few packs of markers, colored pencils, and some glue sticks and something nice and organized to store them in so that the kids can use the materials, and feel empowered. I would also like the multi-cultural color packs of crayons and colored pencils that many brands carry so that my kids, who are mainly Latino, Asian, and African American, can feel good about drawing their families.

Because I am the music teacher, I see all of the students in the school. This project will benefit every child in this school for years to come. Your donation could empower a child, even in a simple way, to feel pride in themselves, and to be expressive.
