My students need more school supplies like clipboards, markers and erasers. They also need basic calculators to get practice with using the calculators on standardized tests.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Remember how frustrating and distracting it was in school when you had to work with broken supplies; or even worse had to share! What if that problem no longer existed? Would it help you to stay more focused to the task at hand if you didn't have to wait for supplies or deal with broken supplies?
My scholars are young adults with the goal of going to and through college.
I work at a public charter school in St. Louis City, where many scholars are below grade level and struggling to catch up. The struggle to stay focused to the objectives and overall understanding of the lessons can be accredited to their prior education backgrounds and the lack of individual supplies. My goal is to get scholars into an environment where they are excited and anxious to learn using the material without any distractions.
My Project
My goal as a teacher is to get the scholars engaged in math activities/projects and not have to worry about supplies. No scholar should ever have to worry about whether or not they are going to have the supplies to complete and activity or project. The supplies include dry erase markers, red pens, calculators, clipboards, and etc. Another one of my big goals this year is to reduce the use of scrap paper in my class. To do this I am going to be letting the scholars use their desk as their scrap paper. They get to write on their desks with dry erase markers. They get so much more engaged in the lesson plan when they are able to write on the desks. That is just one example of how the supply bin will be utilized.
I teach at a school that works tirelessly to provide a quality education to scholars who otherwise are simply moved through the public school system.
By having these supplies in the classroom I will be able to continue teaching engaging lessons without the scholars getting distracted by whether or not they will have the tools essential to learning.
