Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most mornings I spend the first few minutes checking in with each student to see where their school brain is. Are they hungry, sad, angry, or embarrassed? What can I do to put that first smile on their face and switch their brain into learning mode?

My students are a group of hard working kids who encounter everyday situations most adults could never even dream of.

My school works hard to create a community where all families feel welcome and safe. We have an almost 90% free or reduced price lunch rate and most years families don't have the financial means to purchase school supplies.

My Project

Every year most of my students do not bring in school supplies. We have been lucky in the past that we have community partners and a small number of families who purchase additional items to supplement the deficient. Unfortunately, as the school year progresses, our supplies dwindle and we are out of many items that we use every day.

My students come to school every day because they WANT to learn, and I simply can not allow the lack of supplies to hinder their enthusiasm.

I utilize whiteboards most days for interactive mini-lessons, where students can work in front of the board, practicing the skill I have demonstrated. They also enjoy this, because they feel like they're participating in a game show and can turn their answers around.

The lap boards will be used for the two students I have that learn best sitting on the floor. Sharpeners, erasers, pens, sharpies, highlighters, word strips, and staples, are items we use every day. Students also have lots of opportunities to create hands-on projects, that show their creativity in a particular content area we are focusing on. I have a personal printer in my room that we use for this, but we go through a lot of ink. The plastic drawers and caddies will help my students stay organized, This means less time hunting for what they need, and more learning time. The book bags will be used for students to take home books to read, and help them keep the books in one place without getting damaged.
