My Students

My first graders are from a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The majority of the families served at my school are considered low income, with more than 95% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Despite the challenges my students might encounter in their daily lives, they are so full of life and passion!

These kiddos are kind, smart and courageous and it's such an honor to be their teacher. My hope is for our classroom to be an oasis where my students can explore, learn, create and (most importantly) have fun!

My Project

As a first year teacher, I am in desperate need of basic supplies and materials that will help make my classroom a space where my students can learn and explore! Unfortunately, I'm not provided sufficient funds by the district to purchase these materials on my own. From pencils to name tags, I could use your in creating the learning environment my first graders deserve!

I'm particularly excited about creating a Calm Corner space in my classroom where my kids can work on self regulation and coping strategies.

In this area I hope to have a sand timer, music, books and some fidget toys so students can restore a sense of calm and get back to the learning! Any time throughout the day a child is feeling frustrated, angry, sad or overwhelmed (which happens now and then when you're six...) they are free to visit the Calm Corner to help them calm down.

In the first grade math curriculum, students gain all kinds of critical learning such as telling time, solving word problems, identifying shapes and adding and subtracting two-digit numbers! In exploring these concepts, it's so important for young children to gain hands-on learning experiences that solidify their knowledge. To create these learning experiences for my students, we will be using materials like dry erase pockets, Expo markers, crayons and chart paper.
