Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I charter school in Lennox, California (a Latin@ immigrant community) and are all striving to be first-generation college students. They are by and large incredibly bright, earnest, kind, and funny.
As a College Readiness teacher, my job is to expose my students to crucial college knowledge, as well as to build/develop their academic skills and confidence to help them not only get to college, but to feel as though they belong once they get there.
Part of this is supporting them to get involved in their communities and see the world behind their high school, so they are better prepared to succeed in college.
My Project
My students struggle with organization. Providing them each with a 3-prong folder and colored paper dividers to organize and present their community service-learning projects will help them stay focused and ultimately, be proud of the projects they are turning in. Students will need to keep track of their service agreement forms, hours logging sheets, journal reflections, and artifacts documenting the process of their service-learning projects.
Every year, students reflect that they get a lot out of going into their communities and putting effort in to help people.
These supplies will help them make a stronger impact, as well as help them understand the gravity of their work and convey it to others.
