Supplies for Students

My students need pencils, paper, protractors and composition books for math class. The paper towels are so students can dry their hands after washing them.

My Students

Many of my students have more than one school age child in their family, so it is a strain for parents to provide financially for all their needs.

I work in a diverse community.

There are more than fifteen different languages spoken by the students in their homes. The students' families are very interested in their children's education and are supportive. Many of the students are from other countries, so English is their second language. Many of the parents have not mastered English, but they still attend parent-teacher meetings and are involved, even if their child has to interpret. The students are eager to learn and enjoy coming to school.

My Project

I have requested pencils, paper, protractors and composition books for math class. The paper towels are so students can dry their hands after washing them. Having materials readily available for the students makes them feel comfortable and helps keep the class running smoothly. In my class, it is not uncommon for a student's notebook to fill up quickly because there are many notes, assignments and projects to do. Also, students use a computer-based math program that is individualized to each student in the class. The program prints out the students' progress and their next assignment, so there can never be enough copy paper for the class.

Even though "public school" is free, it really isn't when you look at the cost of providing for one child to attend school.

The cost of school clothes and supplies can be a hardship to the average parent in this economy. If there are donors who are generous enough to lighten the load on parents and their children, then they are contributing to the future in a mighty way.
