My students need basic supplies in the SpEd class, & they need the availability to use some of these resources in their GenEd classes. The markers, dry erase lapboards, notebooks, & book organizers are especially important!
My students range from Kindergarten through 5th grade. As a Special Education teacher, every day I work with students in small groups, grouped by grade levels or by ability levels. They have disabilities ranging from Developmental Delay, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disability, Health Impairment, and more. These disabilities impact their progress in the general education curriculum and therefore they require specially designed instruction in Reading, Written Expression, Mathematics, and/or Social/Emotional/Behavior.
My students deserve the resources to succeed.
Coming from diverse backgrounds - culturally, socioeconomically, etc, many of them lack the necessary supports to be successful. They rely on those supports being provided through their school. I support more than 30 students across all grade levels, and they require different supplies and resources to have access to their curriculum. My intention through this project is to fill the gaps so I can better meet their needs.
My Project
Unlike GenEd classrooms each September, SpEd classes do not receive parent donations of supplies. While I am allotted a very small amount of funding for my class each year, it is never enough to fully stock the class my students deserve, especially when so many student supplies are consumable and need to continually be replaced. The supplies listed in my cart are all required to fully support my students in my Resource room as well as better support them in their GenEd classes.
These classroom necessities will help engage students in learning and allow them to better access their classroom content.
The markers and pens enable students to be creative and add illustrations to projects and writing tasks. Students love white boards! We will use these in math lessons and games, spelling activities, and writing work. The timers will help students who need time management support as well as incentives to get started and finish strong. The book boxes will enable students to get and stay organized and garner buy-in for classroom setup. Supplies such as the reading strips simply support students who need aids to be better learners.
With many students on my caseload also being English Language Learners, I have made choices that incorporate how they will also be included and learn best. Everything in my cart is for my students, supporting their learning, their classroom settings, and enabling them to be more successful each day.
