Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each child in my class uses an implement pouch that contains their basic writing tools. Because most of my children cannot afford their own supplies, I provide each student with their own pouch. It creates a sense of pride and equity since everyone has the same materials.

Most of my scholars come from impoverished backgrounds with families that work two to three jobs to make ends meet.

My students work just as hard as their families on their studies and in Safety Patrol. They take deep pride in contributing to their schoolmates, their school, and their community. In order to get to school, many of my students must walk through an area that is rife with gang activity. School provides them a safe, supporting, and loving atmosphere in which each child may thrive and feel seen. My students are smart and funny. They have deep hearts that understand what it is to go without. They have big dreams, and they feel a deep sense of commitment to the world at large. My scholars are my first choice, and I am immensely proud of who they are!

My Project

I will use the books to supplement the math program that we presently use. Since going to Common Core State Standards, these extra resources have become essential. Each day, the children will do warm-up exercises from these books. The books will also provide the students with additional practice in CCSS. We will use the other materials in our implement pouches. Each student is given an implement pouch to use in class since most of my students cannot afford to bring even the most basic of supplies. The children delight in feeling organized and in having their materials in one place. We use the materials for cutting out articles for our journals, writing anecdotal notes, and highlighting close-read passages.

The books will make a difference because they will supplement the math program we are presently using.

Since this is the first year of CCSS, we have had to cull various online resources. These books have come highly recommended, so I think they will simplify our daily spiral review. As previously mentioned, the students take great pride in feeling like professional learners, scholars, and these implement pouches help them to feel organized and prepared each day!
