My Students

I have 7 students in a K/1 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.

My Project

We complete many hands on activities in our classroom to work on many different social, academic and fine motor skills goals. Almost all of the materials we use are printed, laminated and have Velcro pieces to make the activities interactive and so that they can be used many times. All of my students need to work on fine motor skills so the interactive activities with Velcro not only help with academic skills but with fine motor skills as well.

We go through about 300 laminating sheets and over 1,000 pieces of Velcro every month to make supplies for our students.

In order to have a variety of activities and to generalize skills they are learning I switch activities every month so we always have a lot of materials to make. My students love our interactive activities and are making a lot of progress so we will continue to make more materials to help them make even more progress!

We use a lot of interactive books and have many more to make. The book binding machine will help in binding all of our books so they are more secure than the binder rings I am currently using to hold them together. My students love to use the interactive books so they get a lot of use and need to be sturdy. The laminating sheets and Velcro will allow us to create more books and other materials that we use in our classroom so that students can continue to have interactive and hands on materials. All of the materials will help to provide more activities in our classroom to help students continue to learn and grow.
