Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school can be a challenging and exciting time in the life of a student. I feel very fortunate to be a part of their journey during this chapter of their stories. I teach math and science to 6th and 7th grade students and work as the Associated Student Body advisor for 6th-8th grade students. Additionally, I host an after-school club called the STEAM Team. Every morning, our diverse student body comes to school early so they can receive a free breakfast to start their day off right. One-hundred percent of our students qualify for a free lunch. Our independent and mature students are often in charge of getting themselves and younger siblings out the door and to school on time. Although this area is known by some for the gangs and crime, it is filled with hard-working families and smart students.

Our students are lively and enthusiastic learners filled with curiosity that inspires everyone at the school!

My Project

Students will use these supplies to create projects that will be donated to the local Animal Humane Society. The local Animal Humane Society comes to our class and teaches the students about how they can help animals, and about the jobs available for people who love animals. The students are able to observe an animal being spayed or neutered. This opportunity inspires the students to help animals in need and become interested in jobs that have to do with animal welfare.

Students will learn to use design software to create designs and then sublimate the designs onto bandanas and other items for animals at the Animal Humane Society.

This project will incorporate technology, science, and math to create an opportunity for authentic project based learning.
