Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Will I have any friends? Did I fall behind? Will school be boring? These are some of the questions students wrote on their end-of-the-year survey when I asked them what they were most nervous about for the next school year.
After a year and a half of remote learning during a time when many students dealt with incredible loss and hardships, my students are happy to return to the classroom this fall -- with a few reservations.
In order to combat these reservations and to support students' mental health, classroom engagement, community building, and creating a welcoming environment will be of paramount importance this fall.
My Project
For this project, I am requesting various educational games and activities to play in class as a way to make everyone feel welcome. After a year of learning at home, students are weary yet eager to return to the classroom, with many expressing worries about making friends and whether they will feel comfortable in class. To help students bond and to make learning fun and engaging after a year of Zoom classes, these games will help students process while learning new skills. For example, the wooden stacking board games will be used to create review activities to combat any learning loss and as a way for students to relearn how to work together. Students will use the poetry games to help them create their own poems, using poetry and an outlet for healing and hope. I am also requesting journals so students can have their own space to process their feelings and write about their experiences.
Our students have struggled so much this past year and a half and returning to school this fall will no doubt be filled with equal parts anxiety and excitement.
