My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title 1 school with many musical opportunities. We have an after-school choir, an after-school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Almost every grade level performs in a special concert once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

Composing music is an important part of our K-5 music curriculum. My students begin composing in kindergarten and become more skilled as they get older. However, they need some basic materials to help them become successful and confident with writing their own music.

"The world is but a canvas for the imagination." Henry David Thoreau's quote hits the nail on the head when it comes to the arts.

I want my students not only to become competent musicians, but also creators of music. They need pencils, pencil eraser caps and clipboards to use during class to write (and a pencil sharpener for when their pencils get dull from all their creating), magnetic paper to use and manipulate on our classroom's whiteboard, lap-sized white boards, dry erase markers and dry erase erasers to use for their music compositions. By having these supplies in our classroom at all times, music composition will become an accessible, artistic activity for every grade. Through these musical compositions, my students will find their musical voices!
