Supplies for AP English Class for Diverse Group of Students
My students need binders, index cards, divider tabs and highlighters to be successful in an AP English/SPED-inclusion classroom, which many of our families would otherwise struggle to obtain.
Our high school brings the beautiful diversity of Tacoma together with the rigorous academic work comparable to any private high school in our city. We believe that all students can be successful, including our student body, which is 75% low-income and 75% students of color.
I co-teach an Advanced Placement Literature and Composition class with a Special Education teacher -- we believe that all students should be exposed to rigorous curriculum and that we have the tools to help them achieve at high levels.
My Project
At the beginning of each school year, students go home with supply lists for seven different classes; this can seem overwhelming for many of our families who struggle financially.
These basic school supplies -- binders, dividers, notebooks, notecards -- will help level the playing field for our students and will knock down barriers that more financially affluent schools rarely encounter.
These supplies will guarantee that students are ready on day one, ready to analyze rigorous texts, create arguments that make a difference in their world and help them to tell their own story. Having this "kit" of supplies ready when students walk in will communicate: "You matter. Let's get learning."
