My Students
100 sixth graders have the ability to text, tweet, and do more with a computer than I can even understand. Yet in my room, the only technological outlet for my students is a fickle overhead projector.
Getting a LCD projector would affect five classes made up of 12 to 22 students per class.
My students are itching to get their hands on technology to use in the classroom. For some reason, at the age of twelve, they already have a knack for technology that could be used as a great tool for engaging them in learning. One of my students actually fixed my computer this year. Even though our middle school serves a high poverty population, they are all still dying to get their hands on a LCD projector to make their ideas come to life.
My Project
The first of many learning experiences that my students will have with this projector will be an animoto book review of a book that they choose to read independently at home. Creating a movie trailer book review will encourage students to continue reading 30 minutes per night. My students are reading 30 minutes per night in order to try and bring their reading levels up by at least 2 years. For some of my struggling students that place on a second grade reading level at the beginning of the year, this project could be a great reward for their hard work. All of my students will also learn about summarizing, writing to persuade, evaluating a text, and responding critically to a text.
This book review project is one of many uses for this projector. We will also use this projector to display high interest vocabulary word power points, educational brain pop videos, and interactive presentations. Many of my students already have limited opportunities to interact with technology; the classroom should be a place where they can explore this medium despite their situation at home.
Our society is getting to a point where my students will need technology for whatever their future profession is.
Every day I tell my students that they can be whatever they want if they work hard towards their goals. The fact of the matter is, if they do not have an equal exposure to technology as their higher income peers, many of their goals cannot be met.
