SuperScience - Connecting Science to Reading and Writing

My Students

My students are fifth grade students who attend a neighborhood school in a rural/suburban community. The majority of my students live within walking distance of our school. The majority of the children are able to read, write, and perform mathematics at grade level by fifth grade. As a result, our students need additional challenges to keep them engaged and motivated.

My students enjoy learning about science topics and will love using these magazines to increase their knowledge of many exciting topics.

In addition, they will be exposed to excellent informational writing.

My Project

A class subscription to Scholastic SuperScience magazine will help my students learn the science standards while also exposing them to good nonfiction writing. This resource will be a valuable supplement to our current science textbook.

The monthly SuperScience magazines provide excellent nonfiction articles related to various earth, life, and physical science topics.

In addition to the articles, the magazines include numerous examples of nonfiction text features such as photos, labeled diagrams, charts, tables, graphs, etc. The magazines also include hands on activities and experiments that will further develop the students' understanding of the fifth grade science standards. The use of these resources will not only assist in the students' development of science skills, but also their development of reading skills related to informational text.
