My Students
The United States has been called, "The Land of Opportunity." Most citizens can describe the traditional "American Dream" as the right and ability to carve out any life you choose. Unfortunately, not all opportunities are equal.
My students are the picture of America.
They come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and vastly varied, socioeconomic lifestyles. Each child enters my classroom with their own life experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. They all want to feel safe and successful, and every one of them brings the need and desire to be loved.
My students are curious, humorous, and zealous. They enjoy learning with their eyes, ears, and hands. As a classroom family, students work together, learn from each other, and strive for personal goals of personal best.
My Project
Each year, my students are challenged to embark on a journey of personal growth through an integrated reading and writing unit. I use books designed to help students develop their interpersonal skills, passion for service, and resilience for this project.
Because the impact of adversity on learning is so destructive, addressing the development of coping skills has become critical.
Whether it's acute trauma or the ebb and flow of life in general, everyone experiences anxiety at some point and to some degree. The current impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly stressful for students.
With these truths in mind, I would like to add Superpowered: Transform Anxiety into Courage, Confidence, and Resilience by Renee Jain and Shefali Tsabary to our personal growth text set. Students choosing to read Superpowered will be encouraged and instructed in how to build their resiliency against circumstances that tend to promote anxiety instead of empowerment.
