Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine twenty-five kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!
I teach kindergarten at a progressive, dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.
Washington Heights is primarily a Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that twenty-five to forty percent of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!
My Project
I am so excited to provide summer enrichment classes to some of my rising kindergarteners and first graders. I know that going to school in the summer can be difficult, so I want to make sure that I provide them with an engaging curriculum that will excite them and ignite their imaginations.
This summer, we will study superheroes and unlock our own reading super powers.
These books will be read aloud to my students to help them uncover gender stereotypes and biases. Students will create their own criteria for what it takes to be a superhero and find their inner voice to fight for fairness!
