My Students

I am the school librarian. Superheroes rule in our school library! My struggling readers dash to the shelves to find their favorite superhero titles. The bins are usually empty by the end of the day, since everybody wants to read these books.

Our school is located in an extremely violent, poverty-stricken urban neighborhood.

Students can't safely walk to the public library. Our administration has no funds for the school library. The good news is that a whole-school effort is bringing rising reading scores. Our teachers are dedicated and hard-working. Parents are supportive, as well. The school library has played a significant part in this reading growth. In my library, students are free to select any book they desire. Numerous studies show that self-selected reading is a major factor in reading improvement. Students will push themselves when they have something they want to read. All of our titles come from grants and gifts. Superhero books have proved especially popular. Those we received in 2010 are battered, but still loved, as new patrons discover them. Students who read the harder chapter books are asking me for more. They are also discovering challenging literature.

My Project

Students select library books weekly; some slip into the library even more frequently. Students read these books out loud to each other, as soon as they are checked out. They read the books to themselves many times over during the week. These activities greatly improve comprehension and fluency. Since the library serves the whole school, students are constantly "growing into" titles. It's exciting to see new classes discover these books. The books I am requesting now will appeal to stronger readers. The drawing book will be very popular. Drawing makes students attend to "steps in a process," an important skill. The girls who have discovered Amelia will adore the new titles about her. They will want to read each one. There are books about the science of Batman's tools; these will create high interest.

Having highly prized titles helps make the library a popular place.

Your gift will provide hours of reading practice, experienced as pleasurable play by my students. I have also noticed that students identify with the adversity superheroes overcome. They are learning that perseverance brings success and can apply this to their own lives. Reading is the superpower that equips children for all future learning.
