My students need a classroom that supports literacy including 85 library books for students to read and balls to sit on that support students' focus and on-task behavior
Our classroom is full of movement and energy and bursting with literacy-based instruction. We begin each day with literacy-based activities and students love choosing their own reading materials, including graphic novels, magazines and nonfiction books.
My students are an energetic group with boys outnumbering girls in the classroom by a 2:1 ratio.
They love having choice in their learning environment and are happy to be buddies with first grade students and help one another out. They respect our classroom, each other and the school and love coming to school each day.
My Project
My students need these resources so that they have books to read in our classroom. "In a January 2010 article for Education Week, Gaby Chapman states that reading increases in proportion to selection, and practice enhances reading scores. A 2002 article by Ray Reutzel and Parker C. Fawson encourages teachers to âÂÂthink of the library in your room as the heart of effective literacy instruction.â Environments rife with printed texts has been shown to increase literacy (B. T. Bowman, 2003)." Our classroom does not have enough books to support student literacy long-term.
Additionally, students are able to focus more deeply on their reading and literacy-related tasks with the use of a stability balls. Research has shown that students who sit on stability balls during school are able to spend more time on-task and improve in their handwriting abilities as well as on their assessments. These supports help students with ADHD and other learning considerations.
This donation will greatly enhance literacy instruction in my classroom by increasing students' access to quality literature at all reading levels and by providing students with the supports needed to focus on reading, instruction, and increase students' reading stamina.
