This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when you were six, seven or eight years old and had a burning interest in a topic, but it was never in your school curriculum? Well, my school allows students to select a topic that interests them, research it, and create something! My first and second graders want to learn about dinosaurs.

My school is located in the inner city and is a TITLE I school.

Fortunately, I have the pleasure of working with a group of twenty-five first and second graders who have an extraordinary interest in dinosaurs. What's wonderful is that they learn so much because it is of such a high interest to them. The children select dinosaurs from a choice of several topics that they could choose to study for an entire semester (or even the whole year), so there is no need for me to try and motivate them. They are already thrilled with the topic. I've never seen children so eager to read, write and create!

My Project

I'm requesting a DVD set and books about dinosaurs that will provide the students with background information. This, along with some other dinosaur books in my classroom will enable them to write their own book about dinosaurs. The book that they'll write is hard-covered and surely will become a treasured keepsake for parents. The other materials that we need include a Design Your Own Dinosaur. These are textured dinosaurs that come with paint and brushes. The children paint their own dinosaurs and then create a diorama habitat for them. The Dinosaur Shapes Project Kit allows children to collage their own dinosaur and provides all the materials and glue needed. I let the group decide what they want to do with the materials. They can use the Dinosaur Shape Kit to create stick puppets and write and perform their own skit, or they can use it to paste onto the cover of their book.

Your generosity will enable students to explore and learn about dinosaurs...an area of high interest to them.

They will watch a DVD, read books, write and create dioramas about dinosaurs. Their creativity is the driving force behind the finished products! With drastic cuts to the school budget, these materials will not be available without your support. Please help my students learn about something that they are so passionate about!
