"It's my turn to play the trombone with the working slide!" I hear this all too often during my band rehearsals. My 30 trombone students share 13 trombones, some of which are more than 30 years old. The older instruments have slides that barely move. This severely hinders their ability to learn.
My students are the best you could ever ask for.
They are energetic, enthusiastic and have big hearts. They enter music contests, participate in regional festivals and perform throughout our community. I teach at a large middle school in an urban setting. The children in my band program hail from every corner of the globe. Our school is not wealthy in worldly possessions, but we are strong through the amazing diversity of our student body. Our children are high-performing and devoted to their musical studies.
My Project
We are asking for two new trombones. As it stands right now, up to three students share each of our trombones. This causes a great deal of wear and tear on instruments already in poor condition due to age. Having three students share each trombone also presents a problem when it comes to practicing at home. The students have to take turns taking home a trombone. Adding two new trombones to our inventory would help begin alleviate both problems.
It's tough to learn on sub-par, damaged old instruments.
It is also frustrating to share an instrument with two other students. Home practice is often out of the question. This factors have never prevented my students from working to their potential. This is a true testament to their character. The grant will make an enormous difference in the lives of my trombone students. Thank you for your time and consideration!
