Super-Size My Ukulele!

My students need larger ukuleles! Our 34 soprano ukuleles are great for smaller kindergarten through 4th grade hands, but some of our middle school students are practically adult-sized. They need tenor ukuleles that fit!

My Students

Our charter school is diverse in two ways: We serve students from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and we have a higher than average population of students with special needs. An additional feature of our 7-year-old school is that we only have General Music and Choir (no band or orchestra). Five years ago we acquired a classroom set of ukuleles through a local grant. We now have 35 soprano ukuleles.

Ukuleles are great instruments for beginning music students.

They are not hard to learn, they are widely available and relatively inexpensive, and they are instruments that students can use immediately, keep using into the future, or use as a stepping stone into learning how to play the guitar.

My Project

Many of our middle school students and a few of our 4th and 5th graders are nearing adult size. Their hands cannot easily play on the small fretboards of our soprano ukuleles.

Having a few tenor ukuleles in the classroom will remove a barrier for the larger-handed students.

It has been a challenge for them as beginners to figure out how to make their fingers fit into the tiny frets.

With tenor ukuleles, they will finally be able to fit their fingers on the frets to create the chords that are a challenge right now and then be able to create music!
