This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in Huntington Park, California.
My classroom supports students with moderate to severe autism and I currently have seven students.
Many of my students are also English language learners and most are non-verbal communicators.
The individual needs of my students vary greatly so it is important to have materials and activities that engage them all. They learn best through the use of pictures, manipulatives, and kinesthetic activities. My students enjoy hands-on materials and are eager to explore new objects.
My Project
The materials in this project will help my students manage their sensory needs in order to help them focus and learn in a supportive environment. Students will be able to practice language arts activities such as letter identification and phonemic awareness with the water table fishing toy. They will also be able to work on developing important social skills including turn taking and communication skills. The cuddle ball and light pad will further support my student’s behavioral needs and help them stay calm and focused which will help them be able to focus and absorb all the wonderful learning material they will be exposed to.
