My Students
This year I have an energetic and enthusiastic young group of kindergarten students. They are excited to be at school and get comfortable in this new environment.
We have spent a lot of time practicing proper behavior for their new school environment, but find that often they still struggle on a daily basis.
Young students are just learning to control their behaviors and need help in obtaining these behavioral skills.
One such student came into class this year playing and fidgeting with his neighbors and was not able to sit still. We have worked together on several different behavioral modifications but are finding that manipulatives or aides is the next step. Items that would help to release his energy without distracting from the rest of the class. This student is not an isolated occurrence and therefore multiple of these items would be beneficial.
My Project
Young children need to move! Children coming into Kindergarten have done nothing but move from the day they were born and trying to get them to calm down and contain that energy is difficult for them.
Unfortunately, many classrooms do not provide the opportunities these students need to move anymore and I hope to change that!
Adding sensory cushions and kick-bands to each kindergarten chair in my room will provide students the opportunity to fidget and move in a way that will help both them and their peers learn in a wiggly, but less-distracting way!
These cushions provide the ability for a student to rock and sway in their chairs as a teacher is teaching. The kick bands that will be attached to the legs of their chairs will allow the students to kick their legs back and forth as well as bounce gently under their chairs. Providing a less distracting way to allow them to move will greatly benefit not only their learning, but every student that is around them.
