Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We face a welcome challenge this year as we navigate the challenges of the new Common Core Standards. At the heart of the new standards is collaboration and group work. Hands-on science and art materials need a home that is easily accessible to foster group work this year.
Our 5th grade class is a sweet, eager bunch.
They live in the heart of Santa Cruz and come mostly from working-class families. They love hands-on learning, group work and presenting projects they've worked long and hard on. They are well-mannered, curious, and hungry for new knowledge.
My Project
These carts will be placed in the center of the classroom. There are five tables where students sit, and five "teams" or learning groups. Students will visit the carts to retrieve science materials for our daily science-driven curriculum, or for art supplies.
We are very excited to use science to drive our curriculum this year.
We will be using FOSS curriculum, which is very hands-on. It requires on-going investigations and experiments. The curriculum is material-heavy and incorporates language arts and math. We need an organizational system that is effective and student-operated.
