Super Scientific Second Graders Study Life Cycles

My students need materials to teach them about different animals' life cycles.

This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade at Johnson Elementary School in rural Indiana. Our school was built in 1956 and is currently being renovated. Most of my students are limited in their life experiences due to their financial situations and location of their homes.

Second grade science is all about life cycles. When we started, the kids were not interested in life cycles. Our first week of school we incorporated a butterfly habitat into our classroom. The students watched the caterpillar every day to see if had changed. When it finally turned into a chrysalis, the students were very excited. It was the hot playground, bathroom, and lunch line topic! The students studied the chrysalis every day waiting for a butterfly to come out. When it finally happened, the students were amazed. This hands-on activity gave the students an experience they will remember for years to come.

All of the life cycle materials that I have requested will give the students hands-on science experiences. The nature blocks will allow the students to hold the creature in its different stages. Seeing the real animal or plant in different stages will allow the students to see the growth and later recognize it in their own environment.

All of the materials that I have requested, like the butterfly habitat, will enhance the students' learning and give them lifelong memories.
