This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have the privilege of looping with my third graders from last year to fourth grade this year. They are absolutely in love with reading informational texts and creating their own research projects. One of their requests for the upcoming year was additional flexible seating and new science reading material. Since they advocated for themselves, I found texts that are within their grade level range and their interests.
The science books and flexible seating will give my students a way of learning that engages them.
They love sitting all across the room and reading about topics they have questions about or that interest them. They then in turn, excite each other about the issues and information. This creates a domino effect of interest in reading and learning. These books would be added to the classroom library and our research station for all students throughout the year. The surf seats will give the students a different way to sit throughout the day than their traditional desks. These surf seats will also hold their Chromebook while they create projects about what they learned.
My goal is to help my students realize that learning can happen on their terms and be focused on their questions and interests. They spend a lot of the day being taught the required material, and I want to give them the space and materials to explore their interests.
