My Students

Are you curious? My students are! They want to know everything, and learning about the world around them is a favorite topic. This monthly Science magazine will provide my students with an engaging and timely print source that will support our lab work. Text books=blah. Science glossy=AHA!

I teach in this city's most ethnically diverse elementary school.

Our students speak nearly 100 languages at home. 70% of our population receives free lunch. We are a Magnet School that admits students based on a lottery system. Our kids don't test to get in, but our unique demographic and our Arts and Technology Magnet help create a vibrant learning environment. My students know that they come to a special place each day. Most of them don't have a strong safety net. Many come to school with extremely limited experience, vocabulary and back ground knowledge. Most come from homes where English is the second language. For some, what they learn in this building is what they learn. My students are hungry for books and current materials. They are ready to work and they are bursting to learn. Facilitating their experience is our challenge!

My Project

My fourth grade students love science. Thank goodness for that, because I am spending a great deal of time working with this content. This is the first year that students take a Standardized Science test. Because it is not tested in earlier grades, the content is easily pushed aside. In fourth grade, we are trying to cover four years of content in just seven months! My class visits the Science Lab weekly. My students love these hands- on experiences and beg for extra lab time. Unfortunately, our text book does not garner the same enthusiasm. It is out of date (Pluto, a planet?), low interest, and is frankly just too boring to inspire further learning. My students desperately need the strong content knowledge that will make their lab experiences meaningful and relevant. A current publication that is theirs will fill this void, and will activate deeper learning that is driven by student interest and inquiry.

Each month this gift will open up doors of inquiry for students who have limited access to print that is current and age appropriate.

My students love science and are starving for information. Scholastic Super Science Monthly will provide the green brain food that they crave!
