My Students

I teach science at a large Illinois elementary school. My students are from low-income families and all are eligible for free lunch. As a teacher and lover of science, I want to instill my love for discovery and inquiry in my students.

Unfortunately, our science textbooks are outdated and not very motivating to my students.

In addition, because of cuts in my school's budget, we are unable to purchase more science resources. In addition to budget cuts, we were told by the school board to expect classes of 35 students, further cutting into our meager resources. Most of my students do not have computers with Internet access at home or parents to take them to the library to find current articles. I would love to be able to have a learning aid that would allow me to teach my students about cutting edge Super Science discoveries and thought-provoking, age-appropriate news stories.

My Project

I currently subscribe to Super Science Magazine and my students argue about which one will get to read the magazines 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. If you fund my project, my students will not have to argue over who will read the magazines first because they will each have a copy.

With the Super Science Magazine I will be able to bring thought-provoking, age-appropriate news stories into my daily lessons.

In addition to teaching current events, I will be able to teach health and safety, political cartoons, maps, graphs, vocabulary builders, debates, and ethics questions.

I will be able to keep my students up-to-date on scientific facts since the world of science is always changing and evolving. My students are eager to learn interesting current events information and science facts that are geared toward middle school students.

This project is also important because minorities and women are underrepresented in the field of science. By introducing my students to fascinating fields of science, their interest in science will grow and perhaps one day they will become scientists themselves. My students and I will be greatly appreciative if you are able to fund my project!
