Super Science Lab

My students need materials for the new Science lab to be successful at my school. We need basic materials to complete hands-on activities such as the rain gauges shown .

My Students

Do you remember as a child playing with bugs, looking at the moon and wondering or playing in water? This Science lab allows the students opportunities to explore these and other hands-on activities as they work with content vocabulary needed for success as they explain their work.

My school is a Title 1 school where families struggle to make ends meet and when it comes to school supplies for the classroom, most of the students cannot bring them in.

Things as simple as pencils must be purchased by the teachers or given by volunteers. We are a total free breakfast and lunch school for all students. We are a very transient school with an ever growing Hispanic population. Students are amazed when they see I have real "dead" insects in frames for them to examine, or when I bring in live worms for them to touch. The students seemed to be very limited on their experiences in the outside world.

My Project

This first time of obtaining resources is one way of setting up the classroom with the needed basics. The basics included are construction paper, pencils, crayons, and picture cards to enhance vocabulary. The students need to be able to use the materials to express what they are learning, if it is just using a piece of paper to describe "this is a solid" and even if someone tears it (2nd grade-matter changes) it is still paper-just smaller, or the kindergarten students coloring and sorting big and little circles. (ways of sorting) As the basic needs are met, more resources will be needed such as non-fiction Science books to incorporate reading with their science. Future resources which I would like to obtain are items to demonstrate sinking and floating, what are magnets and how do we use them? Items to be used for properties of matter such as a small refrigerator to store liquids which are converted to solids. Resources such as simple machines and inclined planes for their use.

I feel Science is an important subject and too many times it gets pushed out of the way because too many teachers do not like to complete the hands on learning which is needed for real comprehension.

I do enjoy this type of learning and having the materials ready to start this process would and is greatly appreciated by not only me but all my students as well. Students are the future of tomorrow and we need to do all we can now to make them interested in Science so as they grow, they succeed.
