Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is an exciting bustle of learning activity. Do you remember what it was like to go to school every day and be excited to learn something new? That is how my students feel and I want to keep them engaged and have then continue to thirst for knowledge.
My students all have special needs.
The class is small with second and third graders. Our school is a K-8 suburban school. It is classified as a Title I school, which means that a large percentage of students are from low income families. My students are kind, thoughtful and ready to learn! They need additional reading materials on their level that we have no budget to provide.
My Project
I am requesting subscriptions to Time for Kids magazines and Scholastic News magazines as well as a boxed set of Scholastic nonfiction readers about American symbols. My students will use these materials to not only improve their reading level by introducing them to a varied vocabulary, but also reinforce their science and social studies lessons and activities. These magazines have colorful and interesting photos as well as detailed graphs full of valuable information. Both Time for Kids and Scholastic News do an amazing job of creating materials that teach students important content in a way that is fun and accessible. Science and social studies can be difficult subjects because of the sophisticated vocabulary, so these materials will hopefully keep them engaged and motivated. Since my students struggle with literacy, I also included a boxed set of Scholastic nonfiction readers which are interesting, inviting and just the right reading level.
These magazines and nonfiction text readers will continue to feed my students' love of learning.
The magazines will energize the classroom and help guide my students toward success. The texts will also help increase my students' interest in American symbols. I'm looking forward to a fantastic school year!
