My Students

Help me keep my monkeys writing! We're nearing the end of an eventful kindergarten year full of joyous discovery. The alphabet, numbers, and words have clicked in their brains, and they are eager to write about what they have learned, and what they are imagining.

Breathless with anticipation, my kindergarteners almost knock the classroom door down trying to get inside each morning.

Isn't that a wonderful situation? I am so proud of them, because they brave our inner-city neighborhood's sidewalks to come every day. My kids arrive early to eat their free or reduced-price breakfast & lunch that their families depend upon. As most of their families work multiple, low-paying jobs in order to survive, they are often too exhausted or may lack the education to support their children academically. In order to better serve the community, I teach Reading & Writing in Spanish with the balance of subjects in English.

My Project

While their parents may not be able to support them as much as they desire, they are a willing audience for my students' stories. We authored a class book and I videotaped each child reading it so that their families could have a DVD of their child reading. This has had a wonderful impact, as my kiddies are always begging to write. In fact, they have kept me so busy printing out their wonderful stories & journals that we've burned through all the printer toner (ink) in the classroom. Eek! We are in the midst of writing about math and the spring science unit. Please don't let their incredible writings grind to a halt. Friends lovingly donated classroom printers to me last year, but my school is unable to provide toner for them. Please, please help my incredible authors rolling.

We are all aware of California's budgetary crisis and the negative effects upon our educational system.

By helping my students now, you will help them stay motivated enough to graduate high school and become California's future workers. Please help me reverse the tide upon our great state by supporting our children.
