Super Scholar Squirrels in the Making!

My students need 10 bouncy bands for chairs, privacy folders, 10 Whisper Phones, 12 clipboards and a class totem (Super Squirrel Capes).

My Students

My school is a high performing public charter school located on the southeast side of Chicago. We currently serve grades K-4, 89% of which qualify for free and reduced lunch, and will be adding one grade level per year until we reach grades K-8. We service approximately 300 scholars, 17 of which qualify for Special Education services.

Our 17 students receiving special education services range from not only kindergarten to fourth grade, but also in their developmental, academic, and social-emotional capabilities.

Within our building, we have one classroom space to service our students receiving special education services. It is my goal to create a classroom space that provides each scholar with the specialized tools and supports he or she needs to grow, not just academically, but holistically. Our students need specialized tools to accommodate their diverse learning styles to achieve their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals.

My Project

10 bouncy bands for chairs: These bands assist our scholars in directing extra energy towards the bands, creating more space for focus on work, and a reduction in negative emotional and physical outbursts. From my past experience, I have seen scholars benefit firsthand from the usage of these chairs.

Privacy Folders- These are a necessary tool to help our diverse learners that struggle to focus their attention on one task at a time

10 Whisper Phones- Scholars use these tools to practice independent reading, while preventing surrounding scholars from becoming distracted by the noise

12 clipboards- Our scholars require frequent breaks from the physical constraint that can come from desks. We’ve seen improvement from scholars who are able to work in alternative settings (bean bag, carpet pillows) that these clipboards can provide

Totem- (2 capes) A large focus of our school community is to promote social emotional growth. The special education team has chosen to use capes to designate our “Super Squirrel Scholars” who exemplify our BE GREAT (bravery, endurance, growth, responsibility, enthusiasm, achievement, team) core values.
