Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Roarrr!" repeat my super students. You can just hear my 2nd graders reading along with the books on the Promethean Board. Their enthusiasm to read shines through with the audio & visual stimulus. A listening center will help them enjoy reading books as well as learn new words. Look, listen, learn!

Imagine 21 eager 2nd graders who love to express themselves and share stories.

Still developing their English language as they are ESOL levels 1-4 and use their native language at times to transfer knowledge. Excited young readers who seek vocabulary knowledge, fluency, prosody, and comprehension as they read. You can usually hear them say "Can I go to the reading center?" You can see buddies helping each other read in the center. If they could only listen to the book-it would be fabulous They love to listen to books on the Promethean board as they get to hear the expression and tone of the book's message just as we loved it when we were little and the teacher read to us in "circle time" and yet they are in 2nd grade and still desire and need that read aloud method. My school is comprised of 98% economically disadvantaged students who are primarily learning the English language and are in need of vocabulary development through different learning modalities such as listening and viewing.

My Project

6 to 8 students would be sitting with their headphones on listening to stories being read aloud to them and/or reviewing skills on the Skill packets and literature books. The listening center would be available & ready to use on a daily basis in the reading center. Students can take the portable center to their teams and read-along with the books and skill packets in their groupings. They will listen to a variety of books such as nonfiction and fiction text which will help them improve their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. While practicing these skills, they will also listen and view for enjoyment. It will create an atmosphere of a "LOVE for books and reading." Often times students feel they must read as a task, but with the listening center they can discover the joy in reading. Confidence will increase as they learn new words and apply it when they read on their own. Students will complete follow-up activities such as role playing, character puppets, and more.

My eager 2nd graders would greatly benefit from audio & visual stimulus in order to improve their English and academic skills.

They have a desire to learn & love to listen to books. I'd like for them to also feel successful and accomplished when they read on their own. I believe that with a listening center, they will discover an intrinsic confidence that will help them read on their own with fluency that will lead to increased comprehension. Super Readers create successful leaders!
