Sunburst Soccer Club will be new to our school this year. Soccer is very popular and many of our students do not have the resources to join soccer clubs and teams because of the overwhelming expenses associated with private clubs. Sunburst Soccer Club will benefit 60, first through sixth grade students. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and have unique family dynamics like single parent families, extended families, grandparents raising grandchildren, and step families. They deserve an opportunity to play and grow through the gift of sports.
The goals for this project are to increase the students' physical well-being, social skills, confidence and self-esteem, study skills, and perseverance.
By encouraging healthy habits, these students will keep their heart healthy and build endurance. Soccer will improve social interactions, build teamwork, and leadership skills. Students will build confidence by being a part of a team with common goals and learn responsibility. When students are faced with decisions on a soccer field they have to adapt quickly and this helps them apply these same skills to life decisions. Lastly, study skills are improved because exercise helps keep minds sharp and allows for problem solving students can apply to their classroom learning. Sunburst students love the sport of soccer, but need the structure and support of caring adults and teachers to help them learn the rules, become team players, and practice and prepare to be better players and leaders.
