Summit Sounds: Drumming for Autism Awareness

My Students

"Let's hit it!" is how we start each class with warmups and improvisation. The drummers playing the beats are key to this working smoothly and IT'S FUN!!

My students are very talented young musicians who are facing some lifelong challenges.

They are all on the Autism Spectrum, dealing with ADHD, or Sensory Integration Disorder. They come to us because they can not function in a typical school. After being with us for a while, these students begin to realize that they can function and become productive members of society. Our school focuses on helping these students reach their full potential by providing opportunities that they normally would not get in a typical school. They take their music seriously and we have been able to sing and play all over the state, including nursing homes, orphanages, and most exciting for the kids, winning a silver medal at the 2013 Sing'N'Joy Louisville Event and performing for the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference in 2014.

My Project

All of our students want to learn to play the drums at least once in their lives. Our classes can only have one or two playing the drums at a time right now because of the noise level. In class the electronic drums will provide the opportunity for the kids to play in the classroom comfortably, many at a time. This helps them with the basic idea of steady beat in the songs and it also helps to build the self-esteem that they need. Headphones are great for the kids because they can practice on their own, get comfortable and then plug into the system to play with the other musicians. As they progress, they will be able to do team and independent work to build musicianship and to be able to practice socialization. We will be able to take these with us when we travel and plug them into the sound system to perform and record, controlling the levels completely. The drum sets will play many roles in the program for the students. First and foremost, it will give all students a chance to play drums in class without sensory overload. They can control the volume while they play, use headphones to block out other noises, and continue to practice without the other distractions. This will enhance the environment not only in the classroom, but on the concert stage as well.
