Summertime & The Learning is Collaborative

I need to attend the Teachers College Reading Institute in New York City in June.

My Students

My 4th graders bring a variety of unique perspectives, talents, and strengths to our classroom community.

Like all children, they are eager to learn, be heard, and create.

Our curriculum is built on the museum model, a model that fosters exploration and discovery, giving students a strong sense of autonomy, interdependence, motivation and a joy for learning.

The museum school model is based on the idea that children learn best through personal exploration and hands-on experience. Teachers use workshop models for math, reading, and writing. Lessons are tailored to meet individual needs, learning styles, and interests. Every nine weeks, our school is turned into a museum run by student docents who share their knowledge and exhibits to educate, enlighten, and entertain our community.

My Project

I'm requesting funding to cover the attendance/registration fee for the week-long Reading Summer Institute at Teachers College/ Columbia University in New York City this June. Together with educators from across the globe, we will "study methods and plan curricula, revitalize our thinking, and most importantly, encourage our students to lead rich and literate lives."

Attending the Reading Summer Institute enables me to continue to grow as a reading teacher focused on inspiring and creating passionate, confident and capable readers.

This institute is a continual source of professional renewal and education for me.

Specifically in my class, I plan to continue to teach the curriculum developed by reading experts at Teachers College, which includes the fundamentals of mini-lessons, abundant time for independent self-selected reading, meaningful read alouds and 1-1 teacher and student conversations about books and reading strategies. By attending this institute I will be better prepared and educated to serve my students' wide range of needs.

At my school, I'm a learning community facilitator, and therefore will be able to share the knowledge and information I glean at this institute with my colleagues. My fellow teachers will be able to implement new strategies and ideas in their classrooms, as well.

In our country, the number of adults reading books each year continues to decline at an alarming rate. I hope to combat and prevent these statistics for future adults, thus creating more literacy-rich communities and literate, engaged citizens.
