This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." ~ Benjamin Franklin.
Getting students engaged during the school year can be easy, but keeping them engaged during the summer can be a challenge. Let's use Speakaboos to keep them focused and engaged in reading during the summer.
My class consists of 23 energetic third graders.
Approximately a third of my students are reading at Intensive and Strategic levels, but they are working diligently everyday to make gains. My students are very caring, respectful, and always willing to give a lending hand. Most of my students come from lower socio-economic households. Ninety-seven percent of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students participate in after school support and/or care due to varied family circumstances. Despite these factors, my students are very enthusiastic about school and engaging in new learning.
My Project
During the summer Speakaboos will allow my students to have access to interactive digital children's stories and activities that are fun and engaging. My students will listen to stories and read along to practice proper pacing and intonation. The Record your Own Story feature will allow for my struggling readers to practice fluency; they'll record themselves reading aloud their favorite stories, and play them back to listen for mistakes that they make during their readings. This process will help my struggling readers be aware of their mistakes, make self-corrections, and practice recording again for a better reading. My students will also be able to keep a digital diary were they can create their own story(ies), play educational games, create e-cards based on their favorite stories, and practice basic computer skills. In class I will be able to utilize Speakaboos as whole class read alongs using a projector, ask questions to check for comprehension, and hold class discussions.
Summer is just around the corner and my students will need literacy support at home during the summer break.
Speakaboos will help create a bridge between home and school by supporting their reading. I know that selected students having access to Speakaboos will truly benefit from the interactive digital storybooks and activities. I'm confident that they will find a love for reading, make reading gains, and be confident readers starting the new school year.
