I need to attend the Teachers College Summer Writing Institute to learn from Lucy Calkins and her team of unbelievable educational experts in the field of writing.
Our school is nestled in a small town in North Carolina. We are a community Title I school with about 450 students and have a growing ESL population. Students at our school love learning and take pride in being a Cougar!
Our fourth graders are on amazing learning teams, changing classes and working together with 2 teachers.
Speaking, listening, reading and writing are the foundational building blocks on which all other learning is built. To deliver this instruction in a meaningful way we use a variety of resources, including rigorous text discussions, accountable talk, small group reading instruction, book clubs and whole group mini-lessons that focus on Common Core standards.
Considering that our physical building is over 40 years old and the curriculum is constantly changing, some of our materials are out of date. Students in fourth grade engage with fiction and nonfiction in both reading and writing.
My Project
By attending the Teachers College Summer Writing Institute I will study the central role of curriculum development and planning in the teaching of writing. I will study the Units of Study in Writing Workshop with some of education's top experts leading the way.
I will learn methods to hold students accountable for doing their best work in writing about reading, genre studies in reading and writing memoir, poetry and short fiction.
In both large and small group settings, I will learn how to use literature to help students craft their writing and build classroom structures that support inquiry and collaboration.
