My Project
Providing students with books to take home over the summer is a crucial investment in their continued learning and literacy development. This simple act directly combats the "summer slide," the phenomenon where students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, experience a decline in reading skills during the extended break. Regular access to books ensures that students maintain and even enhance the skills they've acquired throughout the school year, preventing regression and ensuring they return to the classroom ready to learn.
Beyond preventing learning loss, summer reading fosters vocabulary expansion, improved comprehension, and increased fluency, all of which are essential for academic success.
Furthermore, it sparks a love of reading, encouraging students to explore new worlds and ideas, and ultimately creating lifelong learners. By bridging the gap in access to reading materials, we empower students, promote equitable opportunities, and cultivate a community of engaged and literate individuals.
While books may be available online for students over the summer, it is so important to encourage students to unplug and get outside. A book is the perfect companion at the park, at the beach, or sitting outside and catching some rays. No matter if students travel or stay at home, they can continue the adventure over the summer with a good book!
