Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have recently developed a love for reading & books. Students are leaving books on their desks so they can read any chance they get. I have heard myself say, "Please put your book down while we are focusing on math," only to be answered with, "I just want to read this one last part."
I teach an amazing group of second graders in a low income community of Los Angeles.
100% of the students at our school receive free breakfast/lunch daily. Most of my students live in apartments with crime surrounding them. They have limited access to books and educational opportunities in the summer. According to Gradelevelreading.net, only 18 percent of children from low-income families participate in summer learning programs. Less than one-third participate in any organized summer program or activity. I hope these books will encourage more summer reading and reduce the summer learning loss.
My Project
I want to capitalize on my students' love of reading by providing them with books to borrow and read over the summer. I will encourage students to write/draw something about the books they read to celebrate their learning. I will provide time for these students to share their writing to the new incoming 2nd graders in the hopes of passing on the love for reading. I have compiled a list of books my class is interested in as well as some that are new to them. According to the National Education Association, the more types of reading materials there are in the home, the higher students are in reading proficiency. The Educational Testing Services reported that students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher math scores; however, students read less for fun as they get older. I want my students to enjoy reading and become lifelong readers that read for knowledge and pleasure.
These books will encourage students, not only to read over the summer but it will also build their self esteem.
The fact that they are new books will also tell my students that they are valuable members of our society worth investing in. My hope is that the more my students read, the more they will love being wrapped up in a story. In turn, the more they read the more their reading skills will improve.
