Help me give my students PLAY-Doh, markers, and journals for the simple joys of summer with timeless childhood activities they otherwise will not have.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being five years old and having your world suddenly turned upside down. You don't understand exactly what is going on, but you know the adults in your life are scared, stressed and speak in hushed voices about something called Covid-19. You no longer leave your apartment to head to school where Mrs. Sweeney greets you with a smile and a hug and your breakfast. That cheery classroom, the cubbie where you hang your jacket, the baskets of school supplies wait untouched. The book shelves filled with the books you love to read with your classmates are collecting dust. Your friends and teachers who feel like family to you are no longer part of your daily life.
My students are resilient though and despite living in poverty continue to learn from home.
Our school has lent laptops to families that needed one. My fellow kindergarten teachers and I created a website with videos of us giving direct instruction on concepts, activities, songs, and work. Students send me photos of their work written on the back of envelopes and grocery bags. They may not have the supplies they need, but these families realize the importance of an education and are supportive.
My Project
Summer break is approaching and sadly a carefree summer is not a reality for my students year. With extremely limited resources, families can not provide their child with any extras. Boy, do my students love to play and what great imaginations they have! My project will give these deserving children toys to help them stay active outside like bubbles, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk and balls. Students will also receive play dough, crayons, markers, paper and pencils which encourage creativity, writing and drawing Please help me give my students a few classic childhood toys that they will otherwise go with out and make their summer break as happy as it can be.
